The hand that rocks the cradle rules the world

The work of a mother may not earn a Nobel Prize or an Oscar, and it rarely receives public applause. Even so, its impact is all around us.

As I sit in the waiting room, I notice people dressed neatly and appropriately. A man holds the door for a woman, and she thanks him. The receptionist cheerfully greets each patient and works diligently to register them. A student nurse arrives, introduces herself, and is commended for being early.

These everyday behaviors are learned. As infants, we do not know how to dress, show courtesy, arrive on time, or introduce ourselves well. We learn by watching the people who raise us and by gradually absorbing the culture around us. Over time, that guidance helps prepare children to take their place in society.

God places important people in our lives from the moment we are born. For many, that person is Mom. She helps teach a child how to eat, dress, behave, and participate in society. Although motherhood often goes unnoticed and does not come with public recognition, its responsibilities are demanding and significant. It involves long nights, constant service, and steady instruction. Mothers teach not only through words but also through example, as children closely watch and imitate what they do. In that way, mothers help shape the habits, values, and standards that influence society.

My grandmother used to say, “The hand that rocks the cradle is the hand that rules the world.” That saying reflects the lasting influence mothers have on families and, by extension, society. Moms, be encouraged: your work matters deeply. Fathers are also important, but this reflection is focused on mothers and the influence they have in building a strong home. Long before a woman is married and a child is born, women begin shaping that future for their children through the values they uphold and the husbands they choose. Choosing a Godly man establishes a strong foundation for that future family life.

Being a mother is demanding work, and in many ways, it begins before birth. Once she enters motherhood, that work continues daily. One of its greatest rewards is watching a child grow into a productive member of society. There is deep satisfaction in each milestone and accomplishment, and society benefits every day from the kindness, service, and character that mothers help cultivate.

So, while you may not receive visible rewards for your work, please know that God sees all you do. Society also sees the evidence of your labor every day.

Moms, be encouraged, you are a blessing to your family and all of society.
